Elon Musk now sole owner of Twitter

Social Media

When I think about social media, I can’t help but have mixed emotions about it. It has been both progressive in the way we do business and also mentally damaging to human beings in the last couple decades.

So few of us would ever imagine that at the face of social media bullying or opinions we don’t agree with we would simply wake up one day and buy the whole company so everybody can play fair! Only the richest man in the world would, and he has.

On the 14th of April, Elon announced his interest in buying Twitter and making it a private company to give him full control and power.

With more than 83m followers on Twitter, Elon Musk loves the app as he is constantly sharing there. But does everyone like him? Certainly. Not. After growing tired of dealing with ‘bullies’ and being punished for having an opinion, he has taken the matters of speech freedomintso his own hands, for a price of US$44Bn.

In so doing Elon hopes that the app will finally be truly a platform that encourages free speech without the speech police shutting down those they simply aren’t in agreement with.

His plans for Twitter include introducing a lighter moderation policy to ensure that users have the democracy to share all opinions without restrictions.

He will also be making its algorithm public, to help people better understand the social network. He argues that tweet priority ranking needs to be revisited and the power that is given to corporates that advertise.

Elon is also interested in making longer posts and making impossible to change posts after they have been published.

Twitter being one the largest social media platforms has apparently had low profit margin and user growth particularly in the USA.

According to reuters.com Twitter has been put on the spot for having been the cause of the Arab Spring uprising as well as the U.S Capitol storming in January 2021.

So what does it mean for the yous and mes of the world? Will we have to pay in order for us to use twitter? Will we become privy to  less invasive ad tactics (cc metaverse)? Does this mean that any idiot with an opinion will share it no consequences?

It seems to me that Twitter will remain the brutal place that it has been. And for people who like me have never quite enjoyed it, I hope they will create something new for us there too.
